2025 Annual Report
In 2025, Chamber Music New Zealand | Puoro Taiwhanga Aotearoa delivered a vibrant season of live performance, creative collaboration, and community engagement across Aotearoa New Zealand. From internationally renowned artists and major new commissions to youth music programmes and participatory community projects, our work continued to connect artists and audiences through music experiences that move, challenge, and inspire. Alongside our national concert touring, Te Whitinga Oro programmes reached communities throughout the motu, creating spaces for creativity, connection, and shared musical expression.

Chinese-New Zealand pianist Jian Liu, winner of Best Classical Artist at the 2025 Aotearoa Music Awards, performs with Chamber Music New Zealand in New Plymouth on Saturday 20 June at 4th Wall Theatre. In the lead up to the performance, he had a chat with us about the programme that draws on the soundscapes of his two homes, China and New Zealand, his favourite places in both countries, and what he hopes audiences might feel on hearing the music.

Ā mua is a groundbreaking new work commissioned by Chamber Music New Zealand for our 2026 season. Incorporating kupu (word), taonga puoro, and orchestral string instruments, it's an exploration of how the past, present and future intertwine and connect. "Ki te Whai Ao, ki Te Ao Marama. Light comes into the world. Matter spirals into being. The history of humanity rolls out—longer and more fascinating and complicated than we can imagine, and you have lived many lives through it, coming into and out of being," writes award-winning author Tina Makereti (Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Rangatahi-Matakore, Pākehā), who collaborated with composer and multi-instrumentalist Riki Gooch to create Ā mua. We caught up with Tina and had a chat about writing, her creative process and the experience of working with musicians.
