In 2017 we are pleased to launch a special series of accessible concerts in partnership with the IHC Foundation. These performances focus on inclusion, participation and discovery opportunities for diverse audiences.
We will be offering three relaxed, interactive performances in Hawke's Bay, Wellington and Christchurch.
These concerts will be led by community musician Julian Raphael and will feature the chamber music groups Les Bons Vivants (Hastings & Christchurch) and the Aroha Ensemble (Wellington).
Julian Raphael is a highly experienced community musician, music educator, composer and performer with a philosophy and teaching style that is influenced and informed by music-making of the world's cultures. Both he and the ensembles, will work with groups from the Hohepa Communities and local specialist schools in the week leading up to the concerts. Participation is a big part of these events; trust-building and learning songs prior to the concerts lead to a higher level of participation and an overall more relaxed environment.
This will be a relaxed performance - everybody is encouraged to move around, vocalise and express themselves as they wish.
In 2016, CMNZ won the Arts Access Creative New Zealand Arts for All Award, enabling us to instigate a Facilitator Mentor Programme in Hawke's Bay and Christchurch.
As part of our partnership with the IHC Foundation, Julian Raphael will be working with mentees Chelsea Makere-Savaiinaea (Hawke's Bay), Kimberley Wade (Christchurch) and Laura Durville (Wellington). All mentees are Music Therapists, or training in Music Therapy, who work in a wide range of settings in their communities and are dedicated to bringing positive musical experiences to people with learning disabilities.
