The winner of the 2009 Pettman/ROSL ARTS International Scholarship is the LEONARI TRIO
Hillary Hayes violin (15) born Rotorua
Edward King cello (19) born Auckland
Maria Mo piano (22) born Korea
The Leonari Trio from the University of Waikato was formed in 2009 when violinist Hilary Hayes joined the established duo of Edward King and Maria Mo, who as the Leonari Duo were finalists in the 2007 and 2008 Pettman/ROSL ARTS International Chamber Scholarship. The Trio are tutored by the New Zealand Chamber Soloists at the University of Waikato.
The Trio has already been successful in competitions such as the Te Awamutu Chamber Music Competition and the Hilary Foundation Chamber Music Competition, and perform regularly around the Waikato region.
Individually the members of the Trio have won many important awards. Hilary Hayes was winner of the 2009 PACANZ National Young Performers Competition, the KBB Music National Performers Competition, and finalist of the NZCT/CMNZ National Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition. Edward King is recipient of the prestigious Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship. He was a prizewinner in the Gisborne International Music Competition in 2007 and was awarded the James Wallace Corporation ‘Creative and Performing Art Person of the Year’ from the University of Waikato Blues Award in 2008. Maria Mo has been a prizewinner in the National Concerto Competition, the Kerikeri National Piano Competition and the Hillary Foundation Chamber Music Competition.
The Scholarship
The Trio was selected from 10 different ensembles nominated by the Universities of Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Wellington, and Waikato at auditions held 20 - 23 November at the WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts at the University of Waikato, Hamilton.
Three ensembles were selected for the Final Concert in the Gallagher Concert Chamber, at the Academy on Sunday 22 November 2009: The Matariki String Quartet, (Jessica Alloway, violin, Jonathan Tanner, violin, Charlotte Fetherston, viola, Sophie Williams, cello – Victoria University, Wellington); Leonari Trio, (see above – University of Waikato); Clavino Trio (Rowan Meade, clarinet, Minsi Yang violin, Wendy Huang, piano. The Final concert was recorded and will be broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert.
The adjudicating panel was the BARBIROLLI STRING QUARTET: Rakhi Singh violin, Katie Stillman violin, Ella Brinch viola, and Ashok Klouda cello; Director of ROSL ARTS in London, Roderick Lakin MBE, Chief Executive of Chamber Music New Zealand, Euan Murdoch, and Stephen de Pledge pianist and Professor of Piano, University of Auckland.
The panel was impressed by the quality of music making which all three groups achieved in the final concert. Any one of the groups would have made a worthy winner. The winners performed with great vitality, musicality and commitment. Individually and collectively they are at an ideal point in their professional development to take full advantage of the intensive performance and coaching opportunities which the scholarship offers.
During the Scholarship weekend, the Barbirolli Quartet gave a concert of music by Mozart, Debussy and Brahms (21 November) and Stephen de Pledge led a quartet of NZ musicians, Peter Scholes clarinet, Lara Hall violin and James Tennant cello in a performance of Messiaen’s Quatour pour la fin du temps (22 November). All participants had the opportunity for mentoring and coaching from the Barbirolli Quartet and the scholarship judges, as well as attending career development and overseas study seminars.
In addition to the Hamilton weekend the Barbirolli Quartet concert tour included Purau, Canterbury (16 Nov); Christchurch City Art Gallery (17 Nov); Marama Hall, Dunedin (18 Nov); a fund-raiser for Save the Children in Napier (24 Nov); opening of the 21st Gisborne Music Competition (25 Nov); Pakirikiri Marae, Tokomaru Bay (26 Nov); and Waiheke Island (28 Nov).
PROFESSOR BARRIE PETTMAN AND THE ROSL ARTS NZ SCHOLARSHIP
Professor Pettman’s generosity and great passion for both chamber music and New Zealand, enabled ROSL ARTS to expand its annual NZ Scholarship in 2006 from one musician to a chamber ensemble (duo, trio or quartet). The prize winning ensemble is given a unique opportunity at the outset of their careers to experience the richness and diversity of professional musical life and explore possibilities for post-graduate study in the UK.
I grew so much musically during this experience and came away inspired and with my eyes opened to the many opportunities out there. For young New Zealand musicians it is imperative that there are opportunities such as this to experience musical life abroad, and after the success of the trip, I can’t wait to return to London for postgraduate study in September 2010.
Helen Bevin viola, Duo Giocoso
Winner of the Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship 2008
This Scholarship provided me with a better understanding and insight into the world of a travelling musician. The intense focus and fresh ideas presented in coaching sessions reinforced my love of chamber music. I have some very special memories.
