ROSL offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

16 November 2009

For the fourth year running, the Royal Over-Seas League is on a quest to find the best New Zealand musicians emerging from universities nationwide for a unique scholarship offered to a New Zealand chamber group through the Pettman/ROSL ARTS Scholarship.

ROSL's Director of Arts from London Roderick Lakin MBE is joined on this quest by leading young British ensemble the Baribirolli Quartet, winners of the prestigious ROSL Annual Music Competition in 2008.

Auditions for the 2009/Pettman/ROSL ARTS Scholarship will be held at the WEL Performing Arts Centre of the University of Waikato from 20 - 23 November.  Roderick Lakin will be joined by CMNZ's CEO, Euan Murdoch, pianist Stephen De Pledge and the Barbirolli Quartet to adjudicate.

Duos, trios and quartets nominated by the Universities of Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Waikato and the New Zealand School of Music from Victoria University in Wellington will participate in the auditions.  Three ensembles will be selected for the Final to be held on Sunday 22 November.  This concert will be recorded by Radio New Zealand Concert for later broadcast.

The Barbirolli Quartet and Stephen De Pledge will also give concerts over the weekend of the auditions in Hamilton.  On 20 November the Barbirolli Quartet will give a concert of music by Mozart, Debussy and Brahms; and the following day Stephen De Pledge will lead a performance of Messian's Quartet for the End of Time.

In addition, all participants in the auditions will have the opportunity for mentoring and coaching from the Barbirolloi Quartet and the scholarship judges, as well as attending career development and overseas study seminars.

The Barbirolli Quartet will also be travelling the country giving public concerts in Canterbury (16 and 17 November), Dunedin (18 November), Napier (24 November), Gisborne (25 November), Waiheke Island (28 November).
