New award for Chamber Music Contest

7 March 2011

Chamber Music New Zealand and SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music, are proud to introduce the Statham Award for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Work at each District Contest of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest.

Sponsored by Auckland composer Keith Statham, the $400 award will be given to the school or schools that support the winning group in each District Contest. A further award of $1,000, and a performance at the National Final, either as finalist or demonstration group, will go to the school or schools of the best group, selected from the District Contest winners.

We believe that encouraging the exploration and performance of music written by New Zealand composers will contribute to a vibrant and diverse musical community, and will strongly support the aims of this vital Contest, which is to encourage young musicians to strive towards excellence and to create links with the wider community through music.
