The Borodin Quartet have officially welcomed a new member, violinist Sergey Lomovsky. The Quartet were last in New Zealand in 2010, when they opened our 60th anniversary season.
Lomovsky has replaced Andrei Abramenkov on second violin, who retired after 37 years with the Quartet. He was the longest serving remaining member after cellist Valentin Berlinsky retired in 2007 after 62 years.
Their recent performance in Montreal, Canada, was highly acclaimed. "None of the original Borodin players remain," noted the reviewer in the Montreal Gazette, "but the combination of warmth and discipline for which the 20th-century formation was famous has not deteriorated a bit."
"[The Borodin Quartet's] balance was flawless and each instrument had a distinctive voice that infused the dialogue among them", commented a reviewer in ConcertoNet.
