1. All groups will perform at a District Contest to be organised during June by a local organiser from Chamber Music New Zealand. Actual session times will be advised after entries have been received, but the period will be from 5 June to 17 June 2012.
2. The District Contest Adjudicators will select a winning group and can name up to four highly commended groups at each District Contest. The winning group will receive the Chamber Music New Zealand Prize.
3. An Adjudicator’s Award may be made to a group worthy of special mention. Special prizes may be given out at District Contests by local sponsors to groups chosen by the adjudicators.
4. A Statham Award for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Work will be presented in all districts where one or more New Zealand works are performed.
5. KBB Music Awards may be presented to groups containing wind, brass or percussion who are judged by the adjudicator to be striving for excellence in their playing.
6. At the conclusion of the District Contests, up to twelve groups will be selected by the District Contest Adjudicators to perform at the National Semi-Finals which will be held in Auckland on Friday 3 August 2012.
7. Following the Semi-Finals, up to six groups will be selected to perform at the National Final on Saturday 4 August 2012. Groups will be selected solely on merit, and there will be no obligation for groups to represent all or any particular areas in which a District Contest was held. Groups selected for the National Semi-Finals and Final must perform the same work, with the same personnel, as at their District Contests.
8. All groups will receive a written report from their District Contest Adjudicator, and each member will receive a certificate recognising their participation in the Contest. All groups participating at the National Semi-Finals and Final will receive a certificate recognising their participation and a written report from the National Final Adjudicators.
9. Entries will open on Monday 6 February 2012 and will close at 5pm on Monday 26 March 2012. Entries received after Monday 26 March will not be accepted.
10. The National Contest Organiser will contact you with further information about your District Contests. If you have not received acknowledgement of your entry within two weeks of registration, please contact the National Organiser on Tel 04 802 0758 or email contest@chambermusic.co.nz
1. All entrants to either section of the Contest must be full time students from Year 9 to 13, with an upper age limit of 19 years of age as of the 1 January, 2012 (in line with the Education Act 1989, Section 3).
2. Students may compete in no more than two groups nationwide.
3. No adult may perform in or turn pages for any group.
4. At all levels of the Contest, groups need to provide one copy of an original manuscript for the adjudicator. It is preferred that the entire score be provided for this purpose - a set of parts is acceptable only as a last resort. If a score is out-of-print groups should provide a photocopy. If scores are bought on-line, groups should confirm that they have done so by email. If the musicians are going to deviate from the music in the score in any way, these changes must be clearly marked in the adjudicator’s copy.
5. Audio or visual recordings during sessions are to be made for archival or educational purposes only. Those videoing must get permission from the District Contest Organiser before the Contest starts and agree to abide by any instructions given by the District Contest Organiser. Failure to do so may result in such persons being excluded from the sessions.
6. By entering this Contest you agree that Chamber Music New Zealand may use your name, photograph or any video footage for publicity purposes, including video footage of the National Final, which may be made available on-line as a webcast from August 2012.
7. If selected for National Semi-Finals, the entrants will be responsible for funding their travel and accommodation costs. Where required, Chamber Music New Zealand will make a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs for group members. This contribution will be agreed prior to the National Semi-Final. Groups who do not make it through to the National Final will receive complimentary tickets to the Final on Saturday 4 August.
1. This section is open to groups of three to eight performers. Any combination of instruments may be used, and the group may include a single voice but may not include a conductor.
2. Amplification is not permitted except in the case of instruments which by their nature require it (e.g. guitar, synthesizer) or where required by the score. No microphones will be allowed.
3. One tuned piano (tuned to A440hz) will be provided. For any performance requiring a variant tuning or additional/different keyboard it will be the responsibility of the group to source the instrument and pay any courier costs. Chamber Music New Zealand can help or advise on this matter.
4. If a group is comprised of individuals from different centres, that group must perform in the District Contest in which the majority of entrants reside. If a group is comprised of an equal number of entrants from different centres, they may choose which of those centres they will perform in. A group cannot perform, even non-competitively, in another centre in which none of the members reside. If, in the unlikely event that an exception to this rule must be considered, the Contest Programme Co-ordinator’s decision is final.
5. A group may enter the District Contest regardless of whether or not it wishes to be considered for selection for the National Semi-Finals.
6. Instrumental coaching will be made available to selected groups in selected districts. The coaching will be carried out in May, prior to the District Contests. All groups who apply will be considered for coaching, regardless of standard.
1. An entry fee of $15 per student per entry is applicable for all entries into the Instrumental Performance Section. The total fee from each group must accompany the entry form when posted or submitted electronically. Please post to: CMNZ, P.O Box 6238, Wellington 6141

1. At District and National Contest level, each group is required to present a programme of music consisting of a movement, or movements of works.
2. The total performance time for each group must not be less than 4 minutes nor more than 15 minutes. Tuning time and pauses between movements will not count as performing time. Groups failing to comply with the duration requirement will not be considered for a District Contest placing or inclusion in the National Semi-Finals or Final.
3. To be eligible for selection to the National Semi-Finals, a group must perform an entire work, or movements from a single work, by one composer. Single works or movements of works must be heard in their entirety. No cuts to music will be allowed. Repeats are optional.
4. Groups may perform multiple works by more than one composer at District level providing they keep within the set time limits (see 2. above); however, they will not be considered for selection for the National Semi-Finals.
