Original Composition Section

(Supported by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music and Composers Association of New Zealand)

The Original Composition section is a big part of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, with a junior and senior section open to all students.  Some of our finest NZ composers have started their careers by entering this Contest.

 

Junior Composition Section

  1. This section is open to all students from Year 9 to Year 13.
  2. This section is open to compositions which involve any combination of two to four instruments.  The combination may include a single voice.
  3. The duration of the composition must be not less than 1 minute or more than 4 minutes.  Composers are asked to use a separate stave line for each instrument in the composition.
  4. The winning Junior Composition will be recognised and acknowledged at the National Final.

 

Senior Composition Section

  1. This section is open to all students from Year 9 to year 13.
  2. This section is open to compositions which involve any combination of three to eight instruments.  The combination may include a single voice.
  3. The duration of the composition must be not less than 4 minutes or more than 15 minutes.  Composers are asked to use a separate stave line for each instrument in the composition.
  4. Senior Compositions that are entered in the District Rounds Instrumental Performance Section will also be eligible for a SOUNZ and CANZ Original Composition Performance Award.
  5. The winning Senior Composition will be recognised and acknowledged and, if possible, performed at the National Final. 
  6. If the winning composition is entered in the Instrumental Performance Section, the group performing the winning composition may be asked to perform the work at the National Finals .

 

Composer Awards 2018
 

Senior Section: The winner will receive a SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music prize of $500 cash and one year’s subscription to CANZ (Composer’s Association of New Zealand).

Junior Section: The winner will receive a SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music prize of $100 cash, a SOUNZ voucher to the value of $50 and one year's subscription to CANZ (Composer's Association of New Zealand).

We'll ensure you have enough time to receive this feedback and incorporate any changes into your score before you submit it for judging.
