ARTISTS: Dene Olding (violin), Dimity Hall (violin), Irina Morozova (viola), Julian Smiles (cello), Piers Lane (piano)
Immensely popular on both sides of the Tasman, the Goldner String Quartet and pianist Piers Lane have won numerous accolades for their recordings that include both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine’s Editor’s Choice. The Franck and Elgar quintets are among the finest in the repertoire: the Elgar at his most mysterious and expansive, and the Franck compelling, passionate and intense. These two programmes are completed with a new work from Gareth Farr in celebration of the 21st birthday of sister-cities Sydney and Wellington, as well as two of the masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire: Mendelssohn’s lovely A minor quartet, and one of the most stirring, dramatic and thrilling works ever composed – Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden”.
