NZTrio celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2012, the same year they were presented the KBB CANZ award for outstanding services to NZ music.
In these concerts Bright Sheng’s evocative Four Movements are paired with a brand new commission from Claire Cowan, the young New Zealand composer whose first work for NZTrio was hailed for its “disarming grace and playfulness” by William Dart.
Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, one of the USA’s most exciting composers, leads into Tchaikovsky’s mighty Op 50; and in programme two, Korngold’s glorious opus one is followed by Shostakovich’s Op 67 of 1944, as full of exquisitely beautiful, Jewish-inflected melody as it is a searing indictment of Stalinism and the war.
