“Debbie, Rebecca and I have been wanting to play together for years. We’re delighted to finally be all in the same country so that we can – and these are just gorgeous jewels of pieces, all of them.” Diedre Irons

ARTISTS: Diedre Irons (piano), Deborah Rawson (saxophone) Rebecca Steel (flute)

There is something about this combination of instruments that has inspired composers to their wittiest and most extravagant moods. From the extraordinary ‘Fantastics’ to the unashamed romance of Marc Eychenne, from Shostakovich at his most tuneful to the Frenchman described as ‘Milhaud with a rakish twist’, this programme takes you on a journey through some of the world’s most delightful music, ending with 21st century klezmer and a brand-new commission by Ross Harris.

These three old friends have leapt at the opportunity to play together. Diedre Irons, most recently Head of Classical Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, ‘retired’ in 2011 to enjoy an increasingly busy concert career. Rebecca Steel is former flute with the Philharmonia in London; and Debbie Rawson is Head of Woodwind at the NZ School of Music and leader of the saxophone group Saxcess.

“Diedre Irons’ piano-playing was a joy – bright-toned, and with plenty of tumbling warmth in her phrasing, bringing to the  interactions that vital spark of energy which often sets performances alight” Middle C
