Michael Houstoun Review

Keith Clancy, Radio NZ Concert

16 October 2012

Keith Clancy reviews the Auckland performance of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations by pianist Michael Houstoun.

“One of the variations, with hammered chords .. Houstoun played it magically with the right sense of sort of brusque swagger to it…

...The way that Michael played the theme itself, the tempo, the articulation, was just superb…

Clearly Beethoven is his great love… He’s a magnificent Beethoven pianist. I would put him right up there with other great living pianists and the pianists from the past that I’ve heard. I think he very clearly just adores everything about Beethoven and just wants to put that across to an audience. We’re actually very lucky to have a pianist like him here.”
