New Zealand’s finest woodwind players combine to form the creamy and colourful sounds of Zephyr. The ensemble last toured for CMNZ with Diedre Irons in 2009, garnering praise from critics and audiences alike.
Made up of principal players in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Zephyr has been described as rivalling world-famous chamber ensembles. The members are all experienced chamber musicians in addition to their orchestral work, performing with groups such as Flight and contemporary ensemble Stroma.
These two programmes are filled with humour, melancholy, energy, melody and beautiful lyricism. Gallic wit and elegance characterise Françaix’s Quintet for Woodwinds, while Ligeti described his Six Bagatelles as “Bartók, with a little Stravinsky”. New Zealand works by Ken Wilson, Ross Harris and a new CMNZ commission by Gareth Farr also feature.
