Since 1965, Chamber Music New Zealand has nurtured and showcased secondary school music students in its annual secondary schools chamber music contest. The contest has proved to be a hothouse for top drawer NZ artists such as Michael Houstoun, Bridget Douglas and John Chen. It has also provided thousands more with an insight into the life of a working musician, through intense rehearsal and performance opportunities. For a student this is some of the most valuable work experience they will receive at secondary school.
The 2011 National Finals will be held in Hamiltion over Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July. Two Semi-Final sessions will be held on Friday 15 July. The 12 Semi-Finalists in the Instrumental Performance section of the contest will be whittled down to six groups to compete at the National Final on Saturday night. There will also be a performance of the winning work from the Original Composition section.
