Borodin Quartet Review

Stephen Fisher, Manawatu Standard

20 March 2010

CHAMBER Music New Zealand certainly chose one of the jewels in the crown of international chamber music ensembles for its inaugural concert of the Kaleidoscopes Concert Season, a season that celebrates its diamond jubilee.

Actually five years older than CMNZ itself, the name of the Borodin Quartet has been carried by a variety of musicians, each carefully chosen to best continue the standards for which the quartet has gained its international reputation. A reputation still most deserved if their Palmerston North concert was anything to go by.

The first half consisted of a beautiful performance of Brahms' graceful second string quartet, the second half featuring Shostakovich's first and Tchaikovsky's second string quartets in performances that could only enhance our appreciation of the music.

What made this performance extraordinary, however, was the tremendous feeling of ensemble that these four virtuosos conveyed throughout their performance. Such a carefully matched balance of instruments, with minute attention to detail and an impeccable feeling for the music, allowed each piece to stand as a distinct highlight on its own.The evening finished with Rachmaninov's Romance performed as an encore, where the players continued to captivate an audience that was rapt indeed.
