Amalia Hall violin
John-Paul Muir piano
John-Paul and Amalia have played in many chamber music ensembles together over recent years, with great success. In 2007, they were members of a Trio awarded the ROSL Arts/Pettman International Chamber Music Scholarship which gave the group $50,000 prize to travel to the UK for four weeks in 2008 to perform and attend masterclasses.
Amalia Hall, 21, is currently undertaking post-graduate study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with renowned violinists Pamela Frank and Joseph Silverstein, plus coachings with distinguished artists such as Ida Kavafian and Ignat Solzhenitsyn. Since the age of 9, Amalia has had over 50 solo appearances with orchestras. As a teenager she won numerous national awards, including the Gisborne Music Competition, the National Concerto Competition and the National Young Performer of the Year, and was a laureate of the 2004 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Japan and the 2005 Kloster Schontal International Violin Competition in Germany. One of Amalia's chamber groups at Curtis, the Juniper Quartet, has been invited to perform at the Music from Angel Fire festival, following her return to the U.S.
In 2009 John-Paul completed a Master of Music in piano performance with First Class Honours, studying with Rae de Lisle and Stephen De Pledge at the University of Auckland School of Music. He has won top prizes at many of New Zealand’s leading music competitions including the 2010 Kerikeri National Piano Competition, the National Concerto Competition, and National Young Performer of the Year. In addition to his classical piano studies, John-Paul enjoys improvising and playing jazz, and has studied with Auckland-based jazz pianist Kevin Field. In September this year John-Paul will be moving to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Senior Professor Joan Havill. He receives support from the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust, and is a recipient of the Jack McGill Scholarship, Anne Bellam Scholarship, and the John Baros Scholarship.
